Henry was born in 1810. He was the son of George Calvert and Rosalie Stier. He passed away in 1820.
The final loss came in February 1820 and was the hardest of all. “Never have I written to you with such a heavy heart. Pity my dear sister, your poor friend. In one week I saw the loss of two of my children.” (29 Feb. 1820) Illness (diphtheria) in the form of a high fever and sore throat struck first at Henry, almost ten, a bright, cheerful and playful boy, named for Rosalie’s father, two days later the disease attacked Eugenia and the baby, Amelia Isabella, Eugenia was spared, but the baby died. The shock of this double loss is apparent in Rosalie’s tormented observation to her sister that “out of nine children we lost four, and now when looking at the others, I tremble. It seems to me that they are walking toward the edge of a precipice… I’ll never get over it. These children were so good, so lovable, they promised me so much happiness, and they were taken away in such a short time.” (11 May 1820)
