Sharilyn was born in Alberta on April 24, 1953. She was the daughter of Beatrice Gladys Callihoo and Alexander Montrose Calliou.

Sharilyn received her bachelor of education from the University of Calgary in 1979. She was a school teacher and then community school coordinator for Langevin Junior High (now Riverside) in Calgary and also teacher-librarian at Bridgeland School in the 1980's.

While she was at Langevin, it was Sharilyn's idea to hire a researcher to interview the older residents of Bridgeland-Riverside in order to begin a history of the neighborhood. She wrote the grant proposal and hired and supervised Devon Blean for this project.
