Gertrude M Callaghan was born in 1906 in Narrabri, New South Wales, Australia. She was the older daughter of Stanislaus Callaghan and Amy Ryan. [1] The family soon after briefly moved to Wickham, in the Newcastle region (Stanislaus' home town) before moving to Inverell, on the New England Tableland (like Narrabri, near Amy's home town of Armidale). [2]
Gertrude followed her father and paternal grandfather into the teaching profession. The older of her brothers also became a school teacher. Later, she entered a Catholic Order, becoming Sister Imelda Mary. [3]
