Biography

Lady Margaret Caines of Orchardton, daughter of William Cairnis of Orchardton Galloway and Janet Kennedy of Orchardton,^[1] was born some time after the year 1505 (an uncited estimate based on her father's death date of 1588, according to The Peerage).^[2] The Peerage fails to name her by name but does mention her father under a different variation of her surname Cairnes, and as being William Cairnis and having left three unnamed daughters.^[3] Margaret appears to be one of the three unnamed daughters and was apparently named Margaret after her paternal grandmother, Margaret Agnew, as documented in The peerage.^[4]

She married three times. Her first marriage was with William Kirkpatrick of Kirkmichael, 2nd Lord of Kirkmichael and they married in the year 1539.^[5] Her second marriage was with James Kirkpatrick, a brother of Roger Kirkpatrick of Closeburn, another branch of the Kirkpatrick family.^[6] Her third marriage occurred sometime before 1591 when she married Edward Maxwell.^[7]

Of the marriage between William Kirpatrick of Kirkmichael, 2nd Lord of Kirkmichael and Lady Margaret Cairnes, three children were born: (1) Alexander Kirkpatrick, 3rd Lord of Kirkmichael, Orchardton and Conheath, (2) William Kirkpatrick and (3) Michael Kirkpatrick.^[8]
