Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine, known as Hall Caine, was a British novelist, dramatist, short story writer, poet and critic and was the most highly paid novelist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Eternal City (1901) is the first British novel to have sold over a million copies worldwide. Caine was one of the most commercially successful dramatists of his time.
[1]
Born on 14 May 1853, at 29 Bridgewater Street in Runcorn, Cheshire, England, he was the eldest of the six children of John Caine, age 32, from the Isle of Man and Sarah (née Hall) Caine, age 24, from Cumbria. John, a shipsmith, was working temporarily in Runcorn docks.[1][2]
When John’s work ended the family returned to Liverpool, Merseyside. They settled in Toxteth, near John’s work at Liverpool Docks. Toxteth was densely populated with the thousands working on the docks and local industries. They were living at 12 Brewery Place, off Blair Street, when Caine was baptised on 10 July 1853 at St Michael's in the Hamlet Church, St Michael's Church Road, Aigburth.
[1][2][3][4]
Caine was 2 when his brother John James was born on 21 September 1855 at 14 Rhyl Street. He was 4 when his sister Sarah Jane was born on 21 January 1858 at 21 Rhyl Street. By 1861 the family had moved to 5 Brougham Street. Caine attended the nearby Windsor Street Wesleyan School.
[1][5]
Emma was born on 7 April 1862 when Caine was 8. Fourteen months later Emma died in convulsions brought on by whooping cough she caught from him and their brother John. Two months before Emma’s death 5 year old Sarah died after she developed hydrocephaly following a fever. [1]
Hall began living on the Isle of Man in 1895. He married Mary Chandler in 1886. They had two sons: Gordon Ralph Hall, and Derwent Hall.[1]
