Erik Bye was a Norwegian-American journalist and performer well-known for his radio and television personalities. He worked for the AP, BBC, as well as NRK. He was knighted by the King of Norway in 1978, becoming a Knight, 1st Class in the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. NRK viewers voted him the third greatest Norwegian of the 20 century in 2005; King Olav V and Einar Gerhardsen received more votes.[1]
Erik E Bye, son of baritone Erik Ole Bye and Rønnaug Dahl, was born on 1 March 1926 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States.[2][3] When he was six years old, his family returned to Norway eventually settling in Oslo. During World War II, he joined the Norwegian Resistance Movement. After the war, he attended college in the United States at both Midland Lutheran College and University of Wisconsin in Madison.
In 1953, Bye began his career as a reporter with the Associated Press (AP) while he freelanced with the Norwegian Broadcasting Company (NRK). He also married Tove Billington Jørgensen the same year. He moved to London in 1955 to work with the BBC in a three year apprenticeship. In 1958, he returned to Norway and began working with NRK.
Erik died at age 76 of cancer in 2004.[4] Erik Eriksson Bye died 13 Oct 2004 (aged 78) and lies buried at Asker Kirkegard, Asker, Asker kommune, Akershus fylke, Norway.[5]
Parents: Opera singer, later businessman Erik Ole Bye (1883–1953) and housewife, later businesswoman Rønnaug Dahl (1889–1980).
Erik E Bye married on 17 October 1953 to politician Tove Billington Jørgensen (28 July 1928—15 May 2008), daughter of bank correspondent Carl Christian Jørgensen (1897–1947) and Ragnhild Elisabeth Billington (1899–1976).
