Jeffrey Walter Butts, of Mountain View, Hawaii, died on December 14, 2010 after a short illness. He was born on February 15, 1947, in Healdsburg and attended local schools, graduating from Healdsburg High in 1965. A talented musician, he was a member of the Dixie Six dance band during high school, and in later years played his cornet on the cable cars in San Francisco. Jeff served in the U.S. Navy for eight years, receiving training in electronics and calibration. Returning to Sonoma County in 1973, he owned and operated a commercial fishing boat out of Bodega Bay and attended S.R.J.C. Following employment at a private robotics firm, he worked for Hewlett-Packard for many years until his retirement. He owned a home in a remote area up Geysers Road and enjoyed the wildlife and solitude there. Llamas, goats, bunnies, chipmunks, bats, cats, and hummingbirds were welcomed and nurtured at his property on the mountain. He had a deep respect and love of all animals. When he moved to Hawaii in 2009, he volunteered time at the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens and Rainbow Animal Friends Sanctuary. Definitely an independent spirit, Jeff had a high regard for honesty and integrity. Family and friends will miss his quick wit and entertaining stories. An able do-it-yourselfer, he seemed to have an unusual talent for invention and an innate ability to do many things well. Jeff was predeceased by his father Milton Butts, stepfather Edwin Langhart, and mother Chrystal Langhart. He is survived by daughter Angela Derr of Hot Springs, So. Dakota; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Melinda Hill of Healdsburg and Carolyn Christian of Ben Lomond; four nieces and nephews; and his friend and companion Pat Steele of Mountain View, Hawaii.
