1776 Project
Joseph Buttrick performed Patriotic Service in Massachusetts in the American Revolution.

Joseph Buttrick is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A017838.

"Joseph Butterick ye son of Jonathan Butterick & Elisabeth his wife was born January 9th 1723/4."[1] Joseph was son of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Wooley) Butterick" and was born January 9, 1723/1724 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[2] [3]

"Joseph Buttrick & Sarah Brown both of Concord were married by the Revd. Wm. Bliss July 23, 1751."[4] [5]

Joseph Buttrick assisted in establishing American Independence when he fought with his brother Col. John Buttrick, who commanded the Americans at the Concord fight at the commencement of the Revolutionary War. [n.b. more to follow, Ann Dysart 12/27/2021]

The 1790 U.S. Federal Census records Joseph Buttrick living in Concord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. In his household are 2 free white males over the age of 16, 6 free while females over the age of 16, no free white males or females under 16 years of age, and no other free persons or slaves.[6]

The 1800 U.S. Federal Census records Joseph Buttrick living in Concord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. In his household are 1 free white male age of 26-44, 1 free white male 45 and over, 1 free white female 10-15, and 1 free while female age 45 and over. A total al 1 household member under age 16, 3 household members over age 25 for a total of 4 household members.[7]


Joseph and Sarah (Brown) Buttrick are known to have had the following children:

  • "Tilly Buttrick son of Joseph Buttrick and Sarah his wife was born April 26, 1754."[9]
  • "Joseph Buttrick son of Joseph Buttrick & Sarah his wife, was born Sept 23, 1768."[10]

"Joseph Buttrick, husband of Sarah Buttrick died December 30, 1803, [aged 80. ch. rec.]" [11] He was buried in Old Hill Burying Ground, Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.[12]

Buttrick-201 and Buttrick-48 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same individuals. The only difference is their birth year which is explained that the vital records recorded the date old style with the year as 1723/24.
