Joseph Donald Butterfield was born on 16 January 1901 and was baptised on 3 March 1901 at St Stephen, Steeton-in-Craven, Yorkshire[1]. He was the son of Frederick Crossley Butterfield, a Gardener, and Elizabeth Ruddock.

Sadly his brother John Arthur Butterfield was killed in the 1st World War, on 26 August 1918.
Joseph emigrated from England to New Zealand with his parents and some of his siblings.In the 1926 New Zealand Electoral Rolls (1853-2010), Joseph Donald Butterfield (a fruit packer) was recorded living at Levy's Road, Glen Eden, Auckland.
He married Elsie May Harrison (the daughter of Leonard Harrison and Louisa Hayward Bullen) in 1926. Children (if any) unknown.
In the 1928 New Zealand Electoral Rolls (1853-2010), Joseph Donald Butterfield (a storeman) was recorded living at 11 Wilton Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland with his wife Elsie May Butterfield. Also in the household was his widowed mother-in-law Louisa Heyward Harrison.
In the 1943 New Zealand Electoral Rolls (1853-2010), Joseph Donald Butterfield (a traveller) was recorded living at 204 Garnett Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland with his wife Elsie May Butterfield.
In the 1957 New Zealand Electoral Rolls (1853-2010), Joseph was recorded living at 24 Duke Street, Roskill, Auckland. His wife Elsie.
His wife Elsie died on 13 April 1980.
Joseph Donald Butterfield was still residing at Duke Street when he passed away less than a year later, on 9 February 1981, at the age of 80. He was cremated on 12 February 1981 at Purewa Cemetery, Meadowbank, Auckland. His ashes were interred on 13 February 1981 at Purewa Cemetery[4][5]. PLOT: Block X Row 27 Plot 19
