Biography

John Butterfield was born September 25, 1705, a son to Joseph Butterfield and Eunice Heald in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

He married Mary Read (daughter of John Read/Reed and Jane Chamberlain) on December 21, 1727 in Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

They had 7 children; Mary (1728), Thomas (1731), John (1733), Charles (1735), Sarah (1737), James (1730) and Lucy (1745).

John Butterfield and Mary Read resided in Westford, Massachusetts where the births of five children are recorded. The family seems then to be in Dunstable and Nashua, New Hampshire where John died in 1758. Two children may have been born in Dunstable/Nashua though the youngest two children are more speculative.

John Butterfield was taxed in the parish of West Dunstable in 1740.[1] In 1750, John Butterfield served on a committee related to the repair of third bridge at Nashua. The widow Mary Butterfield kept a tavern in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1769.[2]

John died at Nashua, New Hampshire by 22 April 1758 when his estate entered probate.

Probate

John Butterfield of Nashua did not leave a will and his estate entered probate 22 April 1758 with widow Mary renouncing administration in favor of her son Thomas Butterfield yeoman of Dunstable. Inventory valued the estate at £4060.16.0. Thomas Butterfield had a claim against the estate of £3266.16.10 recorded on 1 December 1769, and the residue of the estate was settled on Thomas on 7 February 1772.[3]

Butterfield-3671 and Butterfield-2204 appear to represent the same person because: Potential duplicate - both married same spouse same day
