Biography
Howard Edward Butt was born on 09 April 1895 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. He was the son of Charles Butt and Florence (Thornton) Butt. The 1910 census[1] lists Howard as living with his family in Kerrville, Kerr, Texas where his parents are merchants.

The family operated a store[2] out of their house. His 1917 WWI draft card[3] states that Howard is a merchant in Kerrville. On 05 Sep 1917 Howard was inducted[4] into the US Navy. After serving in the war Howard returned to Kerrville and began expanding the family store, today there are more than 380 H-E-B stores around the nation.
On 05 Dec 1924 Howard married Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth in Kerrville, Texas. Between 1927 and 1943 Mary gave birth to their four children. The 1940 census[5] shows Howard raising his family in Nueces, Texas where he is proprietor of a grocery chain.

Their daughter Mary, born in 1943 did not[6] survive birth. In 1971 their son Charled became president of H-E-B.
Howard E. Butt Sr. passed away on 12 March 1991 in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas. He is buried[7] at Glen Rest Cemetery, Kerrville, Kerr County, Texas next to Mary Elizabeth.
