Biography

James George was the fourth son of James Butler and his wife Hannah Dobin. He was born in Hounslow on 29 December 1817. A James Butler married a Sarah Skendell in Hounslow on 2 April 1837. If this were the same James, he would have been only 19 at the time. Although a few years passed, it is possible that the three sons born to a James Butler and his wife Sarah relate to the same family. They were all born in Hounslow, Thomas, baptized on 18 May 1845, William born in 1847 (died one month later), and another William, born in 1849.

Nothing more is known of James, other than that he was described as a carter when his sons were baptized, but he must have moved away from Hounslow, because he cannot be found in any of the censuses.

In 1867, a Thomas Butler married Jane Ann Fisher in Chelsea. The 1871 census shows that this Thomas was born in Hounslow and was a butcher, living at 8 Church Street, Chelsea with his wife and two daughters, Jane Elizabeth, 3, and Mary Ann, seven months. By 1881, and with his occupation described as “cats’ meat man” he had moved to 9 Park Terraces, Chelsea, with three more children, Nellie born in 1872, George in 1876 and William in 1880. In 1891, he was living at 43 Parkham Street, Battersea, and there were four more children, James, born in 1882, Louis in 1884, May in 1888 and Walter in 1890.

A William Butler, born in Hounslow in about 1850 is shown in the 1881 census as a carter to a cheese monger living at 29 Pocock Street, Southwark. He was married to a Mary Ann with two children, Thomas born in about 1873 and John born in 1875.

There is no certainty about either Thomas or William, except that they were both born in Hounslow and would appear to be the sons of a James and a Sarah. For this reason it cannot be claimed hat they were definitely members of our Butler family.
