Martin was born in Halifax County, Virginia, United States in 1806, the son of Hudson Butler. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Farmer of Halifax County, VIrginia. He moved to Missouri in about 1835.[1]
Martin married the widow Emeline Pugh nee Davis in 1847.[2] The couple had at least two children over the next four years. Martin was a successful merchant, trader, and farmer, well-known in Callaway County.[1]
He passed away at his home in Guthrie, Calloway County, Missouri in 1863[1] and is buried there in Dry Fork Cemetery.[3]
There is a story[3] that Martin left a $500 trust to the town of Guthrie with the stipulation that only the interest could be used, and that it is still "honored" today. Guthrie is unincorporated and no incorporated municipality exists within the township. It's unlikely that a 150+ year old trust with $500 still exists. No supporting documentation has been found.
