Theodore Earl Butler was a leading American impressionist painter.
Theodore Earl Butler was the son of Courtland Philip Livingston Butler and Elizabeth Pierce. He was born at Columbus, Ohio on 12 October 1861[1][2].
He married Suzanne Hoschedé, daughter of Ernest and Alice Hoschedé and step-daughter of painter Claude Monet, on 20 July 1892 at Giverny (Eure, France)[2]. They had two children, James (1893) and Lilly (1894).
Suzanne died in February 1899 and Butler later married her elder sister, Marthe[3].
Theodore Butler stayed in Giverny with his family until the onset of World War I, when they moved to New York. He died at Giverny on 2 May 1936[4].
