Upon the death of their father in 1803, along with his brother, Anthony, he came under the guardianship of Andrew Jackson.
Graduating with West Point Class of 1820, Butler was commissioned as a second lieutenant with the Corps of Artillery on July 1, 1820. Upon the reorganization of the army, he was later assigned to the U.S. 4th Artillery.

Butler served as a colonel with the 3rd Regiment of Dragoons.
