John Cuthbertson Burrell was born on 3rd October 1918 in West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. James T Burrell and Isabel M unknown. [1]
On 3rd November 1939, Johnw as commissioned into the newly-formed Second Australian Imperial Force. He was allocated to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion, the first unit to be formed in the 16th Brigade, 6th Division. After service in Northern Africa, Greece-Crete and Syria, John returned to Australia with his unit before venturing north to Papua and New Guinea, where he served on the Kokoda Track and in the Aitape-Wewak campaign. With the war won, he was demobilised on 11th October 1945. [2]
John married Nancy Belle Willcox in 1949 in Burwood, New South Wales. [3]
He passed away on 1st September 2009 in Sydney, New South Wales.
