Disputed Origins

Jehu Burr had been shown with parents Jonathan Burr and Esther (Stedman) Burr without sources. Anderson in Great Migration, says his origins are unknown.[1] As such, the parents will be removed. When quality sources are found to identify his parents, the documented parents will be added.

Biography

Jehu Burr was born about 1605 based on the estimated date of marriage (but possibly earlier if the eldest son was born some years prior to 1631). His origins were unknown as of the 1995 publication of The Great Migration Begins.[2] Some say he was the son of Jonathan Burr & Esther Stedman.[citation needed] Others have him as the son of Jehu Burr (1570-1654) and Esther Stedman.

He arrived in New England as part of the Winthrop Fleet in 1630 and was made freeman of Roxbury, Massachusetts May 18, 1631. He went to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1636 (as one of its founders[3]) and then to Fairfield, Connecticut after 1641.[4]

He m by 1631 ____ ____. As "____ Bur the wife of Jehu Bur," she was admitted to Roxbury church as member #26, probably at or not long after the organization of the church in 1632 [RChR 75].

"Jacobus, in preparing his study of Fairfield families, noted the following: 'He may have married more than once. The mother of Jehu, Jr., was quite likely sister of John Cable, Sr. There was prob. some relationship between the Burrs and the family of Nathaniel Perry" [FOOF 1:116]. See JOHN CABLE [in GMB] for further discussion on this relationship."[5]

He died by 1654 in Fairfield and perhaps earlier, unless he returned to England ... but the compiler does not favor this..."[6]

His grave is at Old Burying Ground, Fairfield. His Find A Grave memorial has a biography and links to those of his wife and children.[7]

He has many prominent descendants including Governor and Vice President Aaron Burr.[citation needed]

Jehu Burr, along with William Pynchon and Henry Smith were given forty acres of meadow land, south of the "End Brook" to be exempt from taxation on account of the money paid out by them in founding the town of Springfield.[8]

Research Notes

Jacobus in "Families of Old Fairfield" cited here (on page 472) says that Richard Perry of Fairfield (granted land in Fairfield in March 1649) likely married a daughter of Jehu Burr Sr. as Jehu was an administrator of Richard's will and also listed as guardian of Richard's children along with John Burr. This was NOT the Richard Perry of New Haven who, with wife Mary Malbon returned to England in 1651. Perry married 2nd Grace, widow of John Nichols in about 1656. Richard and his unknown Burr wife had at least son Nathaniel who married Esther Lyon and possibly had other children as well. Nathanie's profile currently states that his Burr mother was "Deborah" but without sources.

I read where Jonathan was not his father. Interesting. My many DNA matches links to both of them. Some link directly to Jehu (closer matches) and some link to Jonathan through his son Benjamin (5-8 cousin matches). They may not be father and son but they are definitely related.

Hi Susan, It is a little difficult to comment since the profile for the detached father "Jonathan/Jehu" (spouse of Esther Stedman) is unsourced. So many trees repeat the same errors, DNA matches can be misleading.

The reason the parents were detached is because there was no quality sources showing they were the parents of the immigrant. From what is currently on the profile, I can't tell whether he existed. (I'm not saying he didn't...but I'm just looking at the sources). You might consider doing some research to find some original records (parish records, wills, etc) and work with the English Project to develop that profile.

Good luck in your research!

Anderson's Great Migration of John Cable:

"ASSOCIATIONS: JOHN CABLE was related in some way to JEHU BURR.

First, they were paired in all their migrations. Both first resided in Roxbury, and moved to Springfield in 1636, where both were among the four leading citizens. In contributions made on 13 January 1638 for building a house for Rev. George Moxon and for his maintenance, the largest donations on each occasion were made by William Pynchon, Henry Smith, Jehu Burr and John Cable [SpTR 1:15]. Pynchon and his son-in-law Smith remained in Springfield and were the most prominent citizens in the town for many years to come. Burr and Cable both departed Springfield in 1641 and participated in the founding of Fairfield in that year.

Second, in his will John Cable appointed "my loving kinsman Jehu Burr and John Burr my overseers." The connection was probably through the first wife of Cable, or through Burr's wife."

Also see Anderson's Great Migration Study of John Cable in his profile [comments section] John Cable did not have a daughter named Elizabeth.

You are correct John Cable refers to Jehu Burr as kinsman, but it doesn't seem that relationship is known.

It's getting late, so brain is fuzzy....

Am I reading it right... on p. 300, sketch of John Cable, 2nd wife was Ann (_____) Betts, widow of Roger Betts. She is listed on this profile as the daughter of Jehu Burr, but I don't see Anderson agreeing with this father/daughter relationship. Correct? https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-begins-immigrants-to-ne-1620-1633-vols-i-iii/image?pageName=300&volumeId=12107&rId=23894659

Found & attached daughter: Elizabeth Burr-24. see Anderson GMB p. 279.

I adopted Ann (Burr) Betts a while back. She is NOT listed as daughter of this couple in Anderson GMB p. 279,280. I'm going to detach her and leave a note on profile.

Did some cleanup. Including detaching the Martha wife. What else is needed?

Please clean up the inconsistencies between basic dates/places and the written bio info. Most notably, need source for birthplace and marriage place for Jehu -- Google does not list a town of Roxbury in or near Suffolk County, England. [Note: that there is a Roxbury in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, but of course there were no English settlers in 1585 or in 1625! ]

What is known is that Jehu Burr Sr migrated with Winthrop fleet in 1630, then to Springfield MA in 1636, in association with William Pynchon in Springfield. He then moved to Fairfield about 1641.

See also comment under Ann (Burr) Betts.

No source is indicated for the 2nd wife, Martha (Heath) Burr, and she is not mentioned in the biography.

Will someone please provide a scholarly source? Thanks.

Anderson does not support Sarah, d/o Jehu Burr. Objections to removing her? She will be merged into Sarah Unknown, John Cable's wife.

Considering there are no sources for his parentage, and because Anderson says his origins were unknown, I propose we disconnect his parents, adding them to the biography only. Thoughts?

Does anyone thing both wives named Elizabeth are the SAME? Merge?
