John A. Burns is Notable.

U.S. Congressman, Hawaii Governor. Becoming a resident of Hawaii, in 1913, he attended the University of Hawaii, (1930-31) and was a police officer for the City of Honolulu, (1934-45). In addition, he was chairman of the Traffic Safety Commission for the city and county of Honolulu, (1950-54), Honolulu Civil Defense Administrator, (1951-55) and chairman of Territorial Democratic Central Committee, (1952-56). In 1957, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-fifth Congress and to the next succeeding Congress, when Hawaii became a State in 1959. In 1962, he was elected as a Democrat the 2nd Governor of Hawaii, serving until 1974. During his tenure he served as the personal representative of President Kennedy to the South Pacific Commission Conference in 1962 and was a personal representative of President Johnson with rank of Special Ambassador to the inauguration of President Park of Korea in 1963. He also helped to shape many important elements of Hawaii's social and political structure that continue to this day. After leaving office, he was a real-estate broker until his death from cancer at age 66.

The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) of the University of Hawaii is named after him.
