Biography

Early Life

Oswald Burnand was born on 21 May of 1852 in Marylebone[1], the son of George and Eliza. [2] He was the 2nd of 7 children all but one of whom survived until adulthood.

Oswald was baptised on 27 July 1856, along with his younger sister Amy who was born that year, in the parish church of St Pancras.[3] The family were living at Caledonian Street and the father George was working as a coach painter.

In the 1861 census Oswald (age 7) was living with his parents and two siblings (older sister grace and baby Louis) at 18 Howland Street, St Pancras, a tenement building. He and Grace are going to school. His father is working as a coach painter.[4]

The 1861 census shows 18 Howland Street in 1861 was made up of 9 separate households totalling 25 people, with 4 vacant schedules. 11 of them were children. The people living there have a variety of occupations including tin plate worker, upholsterer, journeyman tailor, a harness maker employing one man, a domestic servant, boot binder, journeyman cabinet maker. One elderly widow is an annuitant. While conditions were undeniably cramped and probably poor, these families are not terribly poor, as they are generally tradespeople and none of the women with husbands are having to work. All the children of a suitable age are going to school.

The Goads Fire Insurance map of 1900 shows the 18 Howland Street as a 4 storey building made of brick, stone or concrete (pink on map) with slate roof (marked o) on the NW corner of Howland St and Whitfield Street. It had single additional window overlooking Whitfield St on most or all floors and more in a narrow part of the rear of the building where it overlooked the single storey extension to 91 Whitfield St. [5]

Howland Street has now been significantly redeveloped and is lined with trees and glass fronted buildings all about 6 floors high. The area is now known as Fitrovia and is just by the BT Communication Tower and joins Howland St Tottenham Court Road at its eastern end.

In 1871 the family had moved, but not far, to 21 Cleveland Street.[6] Oswald, now 17, is working as a Carman and his father is still working as a coach painter. It doesn't say but Louis and the newest addition to the family, Ellen, are probably going to school, although adjacent households with children so mark them 'Scholar' so it is possible they are not. This could indicate monetary problems.

23 Cleveland Street shows on the 1900 insurance map[7], but what should be 21 has been renumbered to 906. This may be something to do with the Middlesex Hospital which backs on the West side of Cleveland Street. When compared to the 1875 OS Map[8] the hospital seems to have extended into the domestic dwellings of Cleveland Street either side of what is assumed to have been #19-23. But 23 and it's neighbour are very similar buildings. Both are 4-storey dwellings made of brick, stone or concrete with slate roof and both have an smaller extended area on one side of a small yard. For #21 this is a single story extension and the roof is not slate. The houses are opposite the junction of Tottenham Street and back onto the Hospital Gardens with a line of trees along the boundary.

There are 9 households. consisting of 36 people in the building. 15 of them are children. There is a similar mix of skilled tradespeople in the house to the previous census, including a couple of French polishers, a dress and mantle trimming maker, a carpenter along with less skilled workers like a servants, laundresses and an attendant. There is even someone who is listed as a horsehair shirt maker! It seems a diverse area. Although the majority of people living there were born in Middlesex, like George, they come from all different parts of the country and even Ireland.

Carman

For most of his life Oswald worked as a carman. A carman is someone who worked delivering goods by horse and cart. They were often employed by railway companies for local deliveries and collections of goods and parcels.[9] Given his move to Kilburn in 1879, very close to a railway station in a rapidly-developing area, it seems quite likely that he was indeed employed by a railway company at some point. He continued in this kind of work until at least 1902.

Marriage

Oswald married Annie Higdon on 8 June 1873 in St John the Evangelist, Charlotte Street, near to where he had been living in earlier records.[10] [11] They were living together at 9 Tottenham Street at the time of the marriage, not far from the Burnand family home from the 1871 census. He was shown as still working as a Carman.

By 1889, 9 Tottenham Street is a shop rather than a dwelling, but some of the buildings around it are still dwellings. It is 3.5 floors high and make of brick, stone or concrete and has a part tile, part slate roof. #9 was on the South side at the Tottenham Court Road end of the Street.

Children

Almost a year later, on 20 Feb 1874, Oswald and Annie had their first child, a daughter named Florence Annie. She was baptised later that year, on 16 September in St John the Evangelist, the same church Oswald and Annie Married in.[12] The family were living at 8 Whitfield Street and Oswald was working as a Carman.

The family continued to live in St Pancras until at least September 1875 when they registered the birth of their second child, Ellen Eliza.[13]

Their first son, Oswald George Isaac, was born on 29 May 1878 and registered over a month later in Hampstead.[14] This indicates move to Hampstead sometime between Sept 1875 and May 1878, before moving back to St Pancras / Marylebone borders for his baptism.

Oswald was baptised soon after birth at St Andrew's in Marylebone[15]. The family were recorded as living at 27 George Street near Portland Street. It is not known why baby Oswald was baptised at this time while older sister Ellen remained unbaptised, but it might be assumed that they were unable to pay the required 'donation' for a baptism unless strictly necessary, and / or were generally not church goers, perhaps for similar reasons. Given the poor rates of infant mortality in London at the time, it is quite likely that Oswald was baptised because he became ill.

There are a number of streets in that area of London that were called George Street around that time. The most likely is a street now called Gosfield Street. This street is not included on the Goad's insurance maps but does show as mixed area "Some comfortable, some poor" on the Booth's Poverty map from 1887[16].

But by September 1879 when Ellen was baptised, the family had moved again; this time to Kilburn. Ellen Eliza Burnand was baptised on 3 September 1879 in St Augustine's parish church in Kilburn.[17]

Ellen Eliza's baptism shows the family living at the Red Lion Inn, Kilburn and the 1881 census places them more specifically in the stables of the Inn where they were living with Eliza's mother and younger brother.[18] They would have been living there in Oct 1880 when they registered the birth of their fourth child, Maud Louise, in Hampstead.[19] Annie and Ellen are showing as scholars in the census. The 1880 Elementary Education Act [20] made primary school attendance compulsory from the ages of 5-10.

Oswald and Annie had two more daughters, Minnie in 1882[21] and Edith, two years later in 1884. Minnie's birth was registered in the district of Hendon, which at that time included the parish of Willesden, the same parish that St Augustine's church was in, so it can be assumed that the family were either at the stables or were living somewhere nearby.

But the registration of Edith's birth shows yet another move for the family, this time to Hertfordshire. Her birth was registered in Watford[22]. A few months after Edith was born, all three as yet un-christened children - Maud, Minnie and Edith were baptised all together in Oxhey Parish Church on 3 Oct 1884.[23][24][25]

In Oct 1885, Oswald's father died and was buried in St Marylebone Cemetery (now called East Finchley Cemetery).[26]

The family continued to live in Oxhey and in 1887 Oswald and Annie had another child in Jan 1887, this time another son Charles Edward. Charles' birth was registered in Watford[27] like Edith's and he was also baptised in Oxhey Parish Church later than month.[28]

The family's moves were far from over though and by Sep 1887 the family were living at 2 Distillery Lane in Hammersmith near Charing Cross Hospital and Minne was being enrolled in St Dunstan's Road School.[29] Minnie, aged 5, was re-enrolled at St Dunstan's and Maud for the first time in Jan 1888.[30][31]

More moves and more children were to follow. Another son Ernest was born in July 1889[32] and baptised at St Alban's Church in Acton Green, Ealing.[33] The family were living at 5 Rothschild Road. But sadly Ernest only lived just past his first birthday and died in Sep 1890.

I have not been able to find a census for 1891 for the family but Oswald and Annie had their ninth and final child, Ada Alice, in April 1893. Her birth was registered in Kensington.[34] She was baptised on 23 April 1893 in St Andrew and St Philip, Kensal Green.[35] The family were living at 46 Southern Street.

In 1895 the family are still in Kensington living at 4 Stockton Mews and Charles enrolled in Middle Row School.[36] This was his first school and he stayed there until Oct 1896. By this time school education was funded by the state and free to families. [37] They lived at Stockton Mews until at least 1897.

Later in 1895 both Florence and Annie got married. Ellen, aged only 20, married William Mitchell on 27 October 1895 in St Thomas Parish Church in North Kensington.[38] Ellen was living with her family in Stockton Mews. Both William and his father both worked as carmen. Ellen's uncle Louis and her mother Annie were witnesses.

Florence married William Barnes on 25 December 1895 at Christ Church, Notting Hill. [39] They are both living at 16 Wheatstone Road at the time of the wedding. Ellen's husband William Mitchell and an M Burnand were witnesses. This could not have been either Maud or Millie as they would have been too young.

Charles was re-registered at Middle Row School in Aug 1898 with their address given as 36 Bosworth Road.[40] The school records show that he had been at Appleford Road school before that and he stayed at Middle Row until June 1899 when he went to Middle Rows Boys school, age 10. In 1899, compulsory education was extended until 12.[41]

On 4th June 1899, son George, married Elizabeth Naylor at St John's Church in Kensal Green. His sister Ellen Eliza, now Mrs Mitchell, was a witness. He was living at 1 Church Place and working as a carman. Oswald is described as being a cab driver, so perhaps a job with better pay for Oswald at this point.[42]

Tragedy struck again in 1900 when their sixteen-year-old daughter Edith died.[43]

Later life

The 1901 census[44] found a much smaller household at 1 South Row, Kensal Green. Only Ada, aged 8 is still a child, and most of the adult children have flown the nest. Maud and Minnie are still living at home and working as laundresses. However Ellen is living in the same building with her husband with Charles and one other lodger.

Maud L Burnand Daughter Single F 20 Laundress Hampstead, London
Minnie Burnand Daughter Single F 19 Laundress Willesden, Middx

Maud and Minnie both got married in 1902. Maud married Henry Caswell on 28 September 1902 in All Saints, Notting Hill. [45] Oswald and Minnie were witnesses. Maud and Henry were both living at 4 Lonsdale Road at the time of the marriage. Oswald is recorded as being a driver.

On Christmas day in 1902, Minnie for some reason called Annie on the marriage certificate married William Andrews at Christ Church, Notting Hill.[46] Annie was living at 96 Southern Street and Oswald was shown working as a carman once more. Oswald was one of the witnesses.

The electoral roll for 1902 and 1904 indicates that they moved a lot around this period with them being registered at 3 South Row and both 115 and 117 Southam Street. By 1906 they had moved to 51 Southam Street.

Things had changed again by 1911.[47] The family were now living at 120 Wornington Road, North Kensington. Ada was still living with them and Minnie too, but Minnie is now Minnie Andrews, a widow at only 29 with an 11 month old child William in tow. Charles, still single has moved back in and there are also three lodgers sharing the home with them all. One of the lodgers is Frederick Castle, a widower, who later marries the recently widowed Minnie.

The census also confirms that in 1911 Oswald and Annie had 9 children, two of whom (Ernest and Edith) had died.

The biggest change however has to be that Oswald is now a greengrocer. Not remarkable in and of itself but something that would have an impact for several generations to come. He is a worker- working for someone else not working on his own account - unlike young Charles who is trading independently as a general dealer.

Charles also got married on Christmas Day, age 25, to Mary Selby in 1912 and also at Christ Church, Notting Hill.[48] Charles is living at the family home, 12 Lionel Mews and both Charles and Oswald are working as General Dealers. One of the witnesses is Florence Rosetta Barnes, which is assumed to be Charles' sister Florence Annie who would have been Mrs Barnes at this time, but I don't know where the new middle name came from.

The Electoral Roll for 1913 & 1914 confirms the address at Lionel Mews and that they had continued to live at 120 Wornington Road from 1911 until then.

It was baby of the family, Ada's turn to get married in February 1914 in Christ Church Notting Hill, the same church as her siblings. She married Frederick Charles Fuller and they were living together at 390 Portobello Road. Oswald was again recorded as a Green Grocer.[49]

In 1922 the census shows Oswald and Annie living at 9a Elm Terrace, Childs Hill, with a seven-year-old adopted child George Stevenson. [50] Oswald is 68 years old and recorded as an invalid. It has not yet been possible to discover who George Stephenson was but a grandson seems most likely. His parents are both alive, so he is not an orphan.

Death

Oswald died in the autumn of 1922, presumably still living in Childs Hill. His death was registered in Hendon.[51] He was buried in October in Kensington and Chelsea, London, England.[52]

Research Notes

Birth and bapstism

  • Date of birth is given as 21 May 1852 on baptism cert and q2 1853 on index. From this I am assuming there is a mistake on the year of birth on the baptism (was several years after birth so more easily done) but that the *birthday* is correct and have assumed a birth date of 21/05/53.
  • However, this conflicts with the 1921 census (25th April) where he is 68 and 1 month which means he was born between 25th Feb and 25th March 1853. With a birth registered in Q2 (Apr-May-June) late March would be the best guess.
  • The baptism certificate is for Bernard, but I am confident that this is for the right person. There are no other matching certificates (se below), the parents and father's occupation match and the date of birth is close (see above). Plus Bernard is a common mis-spelling for Burnand.
  • The baptism gives a sibling Amy. Amy is not present at the 1861 census but this does not mean this is an incorrect record as there is a death certificate for an Amy Burnand in 1858.
  • I've not been able to find any records for his baptism or any records at all for St John the Evangelist on places like family search. This might be because there are none to be found, or because there is a fault with the data set (see marriage notes). But the set at the National Archives is P90/JNE1: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N13635049

Middle name

  • Cannot find any trace of middle name of Isaac that had crept in.

Marriage

  • The marriage record on Ancestry has the correct transcript but points to the wrong image. This has been reported but not corrected. I've not been able to find the image elsewhere. It must have displayed correctly previously as I have information that can only be got from the full certificate.
  • Need map source for Tottenham Street and to look up info for Whitfield Street, and also info on the churches perhaps and other later locations.

Missing census records

  • 1891

School records

  • Records for St Dunstan's / Captain Marryats School have records for other Burnands with different fathers (Charles & WIlliam) at a similar time to Maud and Minnie. Could be extended family? Only recorded brother is Louis so maybe a 1st cousin. There is a George son of George in 1851 census that is from a different family but could trace back to same grandparent (both coach painters)?

George Stephenson

Who was 7yo George in 1921 census?

Grandchildren

Might be nice to go back and add when first grandchild was born and maybe list them too at some point, once rest of family is populated.

64 Portland St Business 1921

This last electoral roll record is probably for the wrong person. It is a business address of 3rd floor 64 Great Portland Street and living at 23 Thornhill Road Croydon. In 1921 Oswald was an invalid and living in Child's Hill. It could be son 'George', but he doesn't use the name Oswald usually. Maybe it could be Charles continuing to run a shared business and while Oswald is not working his name is on the lease? This latter seems more likely - be interesting to see if there is a latter ER record for Charles at that address.

I noticed that you said you were unable to find the 1891 Census for them. This might be of some help: "England and Wales Census, 1891," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:3PRV-S2M : 2 May 2019), Maude Burnand, Fulham, London, England, United Kingdom; from "1891 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO RG 12, London county, subdistrict, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey. It appears to only be a partial listing and the image isn't on the FamilySearch database, but maybe it can help you find it. I'm not sure.

Also: "England and Wales Census, 1891," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:3PRJ-2ZM : 2 May 2019), Annie Burnand in household of Charles Burnand, Fulham, London, England, United Kingdom; from "1891 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO RG 12, London county, subdistrict, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey. And: "England and Wales Census, 1891," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:3PRJ-FW2 : 2 May 2019), Charles Burnand, Fulham, London, England, United Kingdom; from "1891 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO RG 12, London county, subdistrict, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey.
