Biography

Childhood

William was born on 26 Apr 1915 in Hendon, the second child of Charles Edward Burnand and Mary Selby. His birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1915 in the Hendon district.[1]

William was born during WW1 and his father Charles would have been conscripted in 1916. Up until April 1917 Charles remained in England but posted at Saltash in Cornwall but it is not known whether he would have been allowed home to see his family much. Having been posted to France in 1917, Charles was captured by the Germans a year later and did not return until Jan 1919. To three-year-old William, the father returning to him probably seemed like a stranger.

The ICRC records show that William's mother, Mary, had been living with Charles' brother (Oswald) George and his wife Elizabeth at 22 Devonshire Place in Child's Hill during the war. It is not known if the family had been living there prior to the war.

In 1920, the family move to 9 Elm Terrace in Child's Hill. The 1921 census shows William living with his parents and older brother Charles in two rooms. His father is working as a greengrocer on his own account and has a roadside stall in Child's Hill.[2] They were living next door or in the same building as his paternal grandparents (Annie and Charles Oswald Burnand) and his Aunt Ada and Uncle Frederick (Fuller) who were living at number 9a. The Electoral roll records show the family continued to live at 9 Elm Terrace until 1933.

Name Relation Sex Status Age Birth Place Occupation Employer

Mary Burnand Wife F 29 Kilburn, Derbyshire, England Housewife
Charles Edward Burnand Son M 7 Hendon, Middlesex, England
William Frederick Burnand Son M 6 Hendon, Middlesex, England

In the summer of 1925 when William was 10, Charles and Mary had another son, Leslie Alfred. His birth was registered in Hendon. Then in approx. 1932 they had another son, their final child, Dennis Roy. William was 17 when Dennis was born.

In 1934 the family moved to 51 Granville Road where they were to settle for the next 14 years. They were initially joined by Mary's parents Charles and Johanna Selby who stayed with them until at least 1936.

William's brother Charlie, became eligible to vote in 1935 and was still living at home at the time but moved out soon after and was married the following year, probably hastened by the arrival of their first child Mary Jane on 11 July 1936. In 1936, William appears on the electoral roll for the first time living with his parents.

Married life

William married Nelly (Ellen Tweddle) Gibson early in 1937 in Hendon.[3] The electoral rolls show him continuing to live at 51 Granville Road after his wedding until at least the outbreak of war in 1939. His service records show that Nelly had moved to 45 Crewys Road by 28 June 1843.

War

Information for this section have been taken from William's Service Book[4]and his Record of Service[5] On 20 Jun 1940 enlisted at Dover for the duration of the war. His trade was listed as Hawker. [4]'unless otherwise stated. The documents are loaded in the image section.

The newly minted Private William Frederick Burnand was given Army No 6147100 joined the East Surrey Regiment, the same regiment his father had served in. He had a medical exam on the same day. He was graded as in A1 condition. A1 was "Fit for dispatching overseas, as regards physical and mental health, and training". The description given of him on enlistment was of him being 5'7" and 140lbs. He had a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. His maximum chest expansion was 39" and he had a wart on his stomach. His blood group was A2.

He was given unspecified vaccinations (likely small pox) on 21 Aug 1940, 26 April 1943 and 7 May 1944. He received a Tet Tox (Tetanus) inoculation on 23 Aug 1941; TAB (Typhoid / Paratyphoid) inoculations on 4 Aug 1942 and 13 Aug 1943; ATV (unknown vaccine) inoculations on 12 Dec 1942 and 20 Dec 1943; another Tet Tox along with Typhus inoculation on 7 May 1944; another TAB on 22 Aug 1944 and another Typhus on 24 May 1945.

Details of William's training are lost, possibly recorded in the missing Service Book (see below). However in May 1941 William underwent an essential part of his training. His service book records "Experienced DM" which sounds innocuous enough but DM or Adamsite is a chemical warfare agent.

Although the effects of Adamsite are similar to those caused by typical riot control agents (e.g. CS), they are slower in onset but longer in duration, often lasting for 12 or more hours.[1] After a latency period of 5–10 minutes irritation of the eyes, lungs and mucous membranes develops followed by headache, nausea and persistent vomiting.[6]

Soldiers were required to experience DM, so that they might be able to recognise the gas and appreciate its delayed action effects. They were exposed to DM for two minutes: no-one was required to experience DM more than once. This would explain why it was entered into the new Service Book when other training was not.[7]

On 7 July 1942 William was transferred from the East Surrey Regiment to Queen's Royal Regiment. [8]

The website for the Queen's Royal Regiment gives summary details for each year of the war with information grouped by the different battalions[9][10] as well as more detailed descriptions of specific events.[11]

The 2nd/6th Battalion is noted as being in Britain in August 1942 and on 22 August they were inspected by King George VI. In October they embarked in Liverpool and sailed for India via Freetown and Cape Town arriving on 31 October. They then moved onto Iraq.

William sent this photo home to Nell.

At some point on his travels William (kneeling on right) was able to get this photo taken with an unknown comrade, presumably a friend, and get it sent home to Nell as a postcard. It is not clear where it was taken although the uniform and building in the background would suggest it is not in England.

The details for the early part of 1943 are sparce, just reporting that on 22nd March they were part of "The longest approach march in history, from Iraq to Enfidaville. 3,313 miles in 31 days."

On 29 April 1943, while serving with the 2/6 Battalion Queen's Royal Regiment in Tunisia, William was reported missing along with 10 other members of his battalion. This was reported on Casualty List 1147.[12]

On 1st June 1943 Nelly was sent a letter from the Ashford Infantry Records Office notifying her that William had been released from captivity in Tunis by the 1st Army. It makes a reference to letter from William and Lt Sempthill having been sent into the record office on 26th May being returned with the letter but these have been lost.[13] She was living at 45 Crewys Road in Child's Hill.

On 21st June Casualty List 1166 his fate was updated to Not Missing along with Pte F G Fenton, Pte G Johnson and L/Cpl E Wedderburn. Two of his comrades, L/Cpl WR Driscoll and Pte JW Henley were less fortunate and were reported Killed in Action on the same list after an initial report of missing.[14]

On 28 July 1943 William was issued with a new Soldier's Service and Pay Book -Army Book 64 (Part I). A note on the inside cover state the the previous book was taken perhaps while a prisoner? This later document is extant and scans of the pages are included in the attached images. It was an important document and he would have carried it with him at all times. Page 2 includes his signature and on p10 he has written down the name and address of Next of Kin, but he did not complete the Will section. Perhaps he had already done this in the first copy and it was safely held.

Details prior to that date were copied into the new document all in the same handwriting. I suspect that while all the inoculation dates were written in the training records were not as only one training record prior to the issue of the new book was included the aforementioned DM experience.

In August that year William was given a sight test. We know when he enlisted that his sight would have been good and he did not need glasses, as he was given A1 medical condition. Within those 2 years of service William's sight deteriorated terribly. His vision was recorded as 6/60 which means that what he could see at the sight test distance of 6 yards, someone with normal vision could see at 60 yards, he would only have been able to read the top line of the sight chart without his glasses. Even with glasses his sight was only 6/12 which is the minimum required visual acuity for driving in the UK. (See notes on vision below.)

In December William had another medical exam and his classification was changed to B1: "Free from serious organic diseases, able to stand service on lines of communication in France, or in garrisons in the tropics and able to march 5 miles, see to shoot with glasses, and hear well." [15]This change was likely due to being issued glasses, but it is possible he had other health issues as well. From this point onwards William would not be expected to serve on the front line.

On 6 May 1944 William was transferred again, this time to the Green Howards.[16]

On 14 June 1944, William underwent Gas Chamber training. This was likely something William had experienced times before, maybe multiple times, but possibly not since he was issued a new Service Book in June 1943.

"The use of the gas chamber to test if Service personnel could fit their respirators properly dates back to 1918. Servicemen fitted their respirators, entered the chamber and walked round for 5 minutes in an atmosphere of tear gas. After leaving the chamber, respirators were worn for a few more minutes to allow gas to dissipate from clothing. Special capsules of CAP, an early tear gas, were issued for this training. This routine was augmented in 1935. After going through the procedure to check respirators had been fitted properly, each man briefly re-entered the chamber without protection as a demonstration of the protection afforded by the respirator.

By 1941 all Service personnel went through this respirator test and unprotected exposure every three months."[7]

Between 13-19 July 1944 William was at "50 Rest Camp". He had a further 6 days leave between 22-27 November 1944.

In Feb 1945 William was fitted with a partial upper denture. He told family a story about the incident that resulted in losing the teeth.[17] As someone working in supplies part of his duties was visiting villages to obtain goods. On this particular day William and his colleague had managed to obtain a quantity of alcohol - and drink enough of it that they ended up falling off a bridge drunk on the way back to camp with William losing teeth as a result of the fall.

William also said that while in Africa he met up with his brother Charlie and that later at the end of the war he met with his younger brother serving in the Navy (presumably Lesley) when resupplying ships to go to Yugoslavia.[17]

On 6 July 1945 William was allocated to the Age/Service Group 26c which determined the order (but not the date) in which servicemen would be demobilised.

He was granted 28 days leave in August 1945 and reported to 4 Reception Camp on 3 September.

William was awarded his medals in September 1945. He was awarded

  • The 1939–1945 Star - a military campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom on 8 July 1943 for award to British and Commonwealth forces for service in the Second World War. Army personnel had to complete 180 days of service in an operational command to qualify.[18]
  • The Africa Star medal with the Eighth Army Clasp - a UK campaign medal instituted on 8 July 1943 for British and Commonwealth forces who served in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943 [19]
  • The Italy Star - a military campaign medal, instituted by the United Kingdom in May 1945 for award to British Commonwealth forces who served in the Italian Campaign from 1943 to 1945 [20]
  • The War Medal - a campaign medal which was instituted by the United Kingdom on 16 August 1945, for award to citizens of the British Commonwealth who had served full-time in the Armed Forces or the Merchant Navy for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.[21]

He served with the Green Howards until 19 May 1946. His Record of Service card was issued on 18 Feb 1946 at York. It is not clear why there is a difference between the date it was issued and the final date of service.

Post war

From 1946 William was living with his family at 45 Crewys Road. Initially they were living with his older brother Charles, his wife Mary Ann and their children. In 1950 Charles moved into their parents old house at 51 Granville Road and William and Nell continued to occupy 45 Crewys Road with just their family until 1960.

By 1962 they had moved into and were running the Café at 9 Hermitage Lane.

Research notes

Vision Loss

I have a recollection of reading in someone else's military records about loss of vision being related to what they had done while serving. I can't find any reference to this kind of affect more generally, but I hope I will come across those other records while continuing to add research here. However it seems likely that something during his military service caused William's significant loss of vision, especially as it happened in such a short space of time.

The page makes it look like he was transferred from East Sussex to Green Howards but the cover of the book shows that it is Queen's Royal Regiment "Transfer In" register. So it shows that William enlisted on 20 June 1940 was transferred to the Queen's Royal from East Sussex, and then later transferred on to the Green Howards from Queen's Royal.
