Biography

Name

Jacob Burhans was the son of Jan Burhans and Helena Eledt Traphagen. He was probably born in or near Kingston, Ulster, New York Colony, probably in 1679.[1][2]

Christening

On 2 Mar 1679 Jacob was baptized in the Old Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, New York Colony. The witnesses were Wessel ten Broeck and Annetie Matysse.[3]

Death

Jacob probably died in childhood, although the date and place are unknown.[4]. He was not listed when his brother Barent, described as "The eldest son of Jan Burhans who reached his majority" by Burhans,[5] wrote a bond to his siblings while settling his fathers estate dated 30 Oct 1708. This would seem to indicate that Jacob died before age 21, which would mean before 1700, but certainly before 1708. Neither he nor any heirs of his were mentioned in his mother's will dated 19 Oct 1728, although the children of his brother Johannes, deceased, were named.[6] It can be assumed, therefore, that he had no children.
