Biography

Caroline was born in Massachusetts, 1833. Caroline served as a nurse in the United States Civil War from 9 June 1861 to 6 September 1865 at Washington, D. C., Antietam, Gettysburg, Fortress Monroe, Winchester, Wilmington, and Alexandria. In 1866, she began working at the Treasury Department until her retirement in 1920. Caroline also studied medicine and earned an M.D. from Howard University and worked with Dr. Susan Edson. She died in 1922 and was interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
