Biography

Joshua was born on November 22, 1842 in Sheffield Mills, Nova Scotia Colony. He was a son of John Newcomb Burgess and Hannah (Chase) Burgess.

He also had a half sister named Minnie Noble (her name in 1884).

He was educated in Nova Scotia and graduated from Dalhousie University in 1868 in a Bachelor's Degree in Arts.

Opting for study in ministry, he then attended the Presbyterian Church College in Edinburgh, Scotland where he graduated in 1870.

He settled in New Brunswick, where he became the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in West Saint John from 1870-1874. He was ordained there on May 5, 1870.^[1]

He married Mary Helen Noble on March 8, 1871 in Carleton (Saint John) at the residence of the father of the bride, Isaac Noble, Esq. who was a local fish dealer^[2]

His father passed away "at a ripe old age" while he being driven to church by Rev. Burgess when a wheel fell off their wagon.^[3] He also lost two of his young children between 1881 and 1883.

First Presbyterian Church, Oakland, California

In October of 1884, he removed to California for reasons of health with this family.^[4][5]

Initially, he was installed as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in San Fransisco. In 1887, he accepted a pastorate further North in Danville.^[6] He was serving there as late as 1893.

Joshua was a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

His last residence was Berkeley, California. Joshua passed away on January 3, 1935 and in Alameda County and was Interred at California Columbarium Cemetary, Oakland.^[7]
