In 1900 he was living with his paternal grandparents, Peter and Eliza Burger.
He is misidentified in the 1910 census, but looking at the census image shows he was still living in the household of his paternal grandparents, Peter and Eliza Burger. However, his name is indexed as Rushton because he was listed below his uncle-by-marriage George J. Rushton and George's wife and Howard's aunt Jane M. Rushton who lived in the same household. He and his aunt, but no other members of the family, are indexed as part of the household of the neighbors, the Niensteads and the Randolphs.
He was a college journalist at the time of his death.
Urbana, Ill., March 5.—Howard J. Burger, well known in Journalistic circles at the University of Illinois, where he was an associate editor of the Daily Illini, is dead at his home at Woodstock."[1][2]
According to his will dated 25 Nov 1914, he died unmarried but left his estate to his executrix, "my good, kind, true and beloved sweetheart, Rachel Doten" subject to the life use of his grandmother Eliza Burger. The will was filed 9 Mar 1915.[3]
