Biography
Personal Life
Robert was born to Edward Bulwer-Lytton and Rosina Doyle Wheeler.
He was educated at Harrow School and later the University of Bonn.
Robert Bulwer-Lytton married Edith Villiers on October 4th, 1864.[1] They had at least seven children.
Career
Bulwer-Lytton entered the Diplomatic Service in 1849. He was initially appointed as attaché to his Uncle, Sir Henry Bulwer, Minister at Washington DC. He later worked as an attaché in Florence, Paris, The Hague, St Petersburg, Constantinople and Vienna.
He was promoted to Second Secretary in Vienna and thenn appointed Secretary of the Legation at Copenhagen in 1863.
Bulwer-Lytton became Secretary to the Embassy at Vienna and later Paris. By 1874 he was appointed British Minister Plenipotentiary at Lisbon.
He became Governor General and Viceroy of India in 1876.
In 1880 he resigned his Viceroyality and was created Earl of Lytton and Viscount Knebworth.
Starting from the age of twenty-five Lytton published many volumes of poems under the name Owen Meredith. His poetry was very popular during his lifetime.
