Biography

Isabella Bryden Bulman was born in Ontario, Canada, in July of 1883, a daughter of William Bulman and Sarah McIvor. She married Alexander Rogers in Minnesota on the last day of February, 1904; while a newspaper reports places the wedding in her hometown of Thief River Falls[1], in Pennington County, the marriage was officially recorded in neighboring Polk County.

Through the winter following their wedding, when Alexander's work took him to the West Coast, Isabella -- pregnant with their first child -- lived alone in a remote area of northern Minnesota where they intended to stake a claim to land just south of the Canadian border, near the Little Fork River. In May, she was able to register the claim; she then either returned to the claim, or, perhaps more likely, went westward across the state to her family home in Thief River Falls. She gave birth in November to daughter Catherine Anne Rogers, and the family -- including Alexander's parents –– shortly removed to Idaho, and within a few years, to Oregon[2]. A second daughter, Marjorie, was born in or close to 1909.

Barely two months after the move to Oregon, Isabella died, in mid-January of 1910[3]. The 1910 U.S. Census shows Alexander, with his two young daughters, in the town of Harney, in a household that includes his namesake uncle Alexander, his widowed sister Nora (Rogers) Fair, and Nora's nine-year-old daughter Nellie.

From her Death Certificate, Isabella Bryden (Bulman) Rogers was born in Ontario, Canada. She died on the 15th of January, 1910, at Harney, Oregon.

She married Alexander Rogers in Minnesota on the 29th of February, 1904; a newspaper report places the marriage at Isabella's hometown of Thief River Falls, in Pennington County, though the official record is found in neighboring Polk County.

An article in the International Falls, MN, Border Budget of June 2, 1904, "Honeymoon on the Claim" – citing in part the Duluth News Tribune – reports that the couple planned to stake a land claim near the Little Fork River, a few miles south of the Canadian border; Alexander's work however called him to the West Coast. Isabel [the spelling used in the newspaper piece] remained on the remote property through the winter in order to stake the claim, which she entered -- apparently, at or near International Falls -- in May. Pregnant at the time, she either returned to the claim and gave birth there in November, or, more likely, crossed over to her hometown of Thief River Falls in northwestern Minnesota. Her daughter Catherine was born, according to Catherine's death record, on the 21st of November, 1904 (no formal birth record has been located to date).

The little family moved soon afterwards to Idaho, and thence to Oregon's Harney County by late 1909. According to a newspaper report in the Burns Times Herald of January 22, 1910, Catherine died only about two months after that move.

Alexander and Isabella Bryden (Bulman) Rogers were among the great-grandparents of notable actor William McChord Hurt; this profile should be connected to that of Alexander as wife and husband.
