Sarah Bullock was born in 1835 in Onondaga County, New York, USA. Her parents were Benjamin Bullock and Nancy Carrier.
In 1850, Sarah was living with her uncle, Cromwell Bullock in Elbridge, Onondaga County, New York. His household included his wife, Melissa (Everts) Bullock, his son, William, and his mother, Sarah (Morton) Bullock[1]
She married Robert Betts in 1854. Together they had 8 children:
In the 1855 NY State Census, Robert and Sarah were living in Elbridge, Onondaga, New York with their twin daughters, Ada and Ida[2].
In 1860, Robert and Sarah had moved to Camillus in Onondaga County, New York. In addition to their daughters, they had added a son to the family, James[3].
The 1865 NY Census indicates big changes for the family. Sarah was boarding with a Huldah Tyler in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York. The census indicates she is the mother of 4 children--she and Robert had another daughter, Anna, in 1861. But, none of the children were with her, the four children were listed under the Orphan Asylum in Auburn[4]. Robert's absence can be explained by the inscription on his gravestone "CO. C 9TH N.Y. HEAVY ARTILLERY". The 9th New York was recruited from Cayuga and Wayne Counties in 1862.
When the 1870 US Census was taken, the family was back together and was living in Mentz, Cayuga County, New York where Robert was working as a farm laborer. The family included three additional children, Charles, Louis and Laura[5].
In 1875, Robert and Sarah had a new child in the household, Estella. The family was still living in Mentz, Cayuga, New York. James had joined Robert in working as a farmhand. Ada was no longer in the household having married David Christian[6].
The 1880 US Census again reflected a number of changes for Robert and Sarah's family. They were living in the Village of Port Byron, in the Town of Mentz and Robert was working as a teamster. Only, the four youngest children are still at home, Charles, Louis, Laura and Estella[7].
In the 1900 US Census, Robert and Sarah were listed as separate family, however, they were living at the same address as their daughter, Laura, and her family in Auburn, Cayuga, New York. Robert was working as a wood turner[8].
She died in 1906 in Denver, Denver, Colorado, USA[9].
