Biography

William John Buckman was born in Lewes, Sussex in 1834, and baptised at St John sub Castro, Lewes on 28 September 1834. He was the son of John Buckman, a labourer and his wife Martha (nee Borer).[1]

William, together with his family (parents and siblings John and Ruth) embarked upon the Amelia Thompson which departed from Plymouth, England on 28 March 1838 and arrived Port Jackson on 1 July 1838. Only William and his father survived the trip, the other 3 members of the family dying at sea. Martha died of small pox, and John and Ruth died of fever. Four year old William was in quarantine on arrival with whooping cough.

He married Jane Griffiths on 18 July 1854, in Christchurch, Bong Bong, New South Wales, Australia. The church register recorded that they were married after banns: William John Buckman, bachelor & Jane Griffiths, spinster, both of Mittagong made their marks. Witnesses were Daniel Brosnachan & Mary Hemmet both of Mittagong.[2][3][4]

He passed away in Bong Bong (citation needed), New South Wales on 24 November 1861 and was buried at Christ Church Cemetery Bong Bong on 27 November 1861.[5] The burial register recorded: William John Buckman, age 28, blacksmith, abode Mittagong, died 24 November, buried 27 November. [6]
