James Buchanan was born on the 7th August 1840, in St George Hanover Square, Middlesex, England, the son of Andrew Buchanan and his wife Frances Katherine Mellish,[1] and was baptised on the 4th September the same year in the church of the Holy Trinity, St Marylebone, Middlesex.[2]
On the 7th April 1861, the 20-year-old James, a Lieutenant with the Royal Navy, was enumerated with hundreds of others as being "at sea and in ports abroad".[3]
On the 2nd April 1871, James (30), a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, was one of several lodgers at 26 Holcombe Street, Westminster.[4]
He and Arabella Catherine Colquitt-Craven were married on the 19th February 1873, at Sevenhampton Church, Gloucestershire. The officiant was the Rev Henry Coventry (brother-in-law of the bride), assisted by the Rev. J. M. Hall, Vicar of Sevenhampton.[5] There were to be no children of this union.
An item regards the wedding was published in the County Observer and Monmouthshire Central Advertiser Abergavenny and Raglan Herald Usk and Pontypool Messenger and Chepstow Argus on the 1st March.[6] (Reproduced below with a little literary licence to allow for the state of the paper page.)

At Sevenhampton Church, February 19th, Mr. J. Buchanan, Commander R.N., son of the Right Hon. Sir A. Buchanan, G.C.B, Her Majesty's Ambassador at the Habsburg court in Vienna, to Arabella Catherine, daughter of Mr. Colquitt-Craven, Brockhampton Park. On the 3rd April 1881, James (40), Retired Commander RN, was living at 130 Belgrave Road, Westminster, with Arabella (36), and their household staff: Caroline Parker (35), lady's maid; Mary Ann Bee (35), cook; Mary Ann King (24), housemaid; and William Pellett (35), manservant.[7]
His father having died the day before, he became 2nd Baronet Buchanan, of Dunburgh on the 13th November 1882.
On the 5th April 1891, James (enumerated as "Sir James Buchanan Bart" (50)), living on private means, was resident in Craigend Castle, Stirlingshire, Scotland — a home he had inherited (along with the baronetcy) from his father). Also in residence were his wife: Arabella (45); Arabella's two nieces and a nephew: Isabella L Craven (14); Hilda C Craven (13); Nigel F Craven (9); and the household staff: Mary Mitchell (48); Emily Philbrock (31); Annie Reid (24); Margaret Reid (20); Janet Murchiston (32).; Elizabeth Blair (26); Mary Yule (17); Georgina Miner (17); James Fisher (35); Charles Weston (19); John Ban (24); and James Muir (18).[8]
On the 31st March 1901, James (60), Retired Commander Royal Navy, was living in Craigend Castle, Stirlingshire. Also in residence were his wife: Arabella (55); and their household staff: Catherine Gillies (50); Mary Kidd (41); Mary Scott (35); Maggie Ewing (16); Jeannie Mccutcheon (16); James Fisher (47); and Edward Keinger (20).[9]
Sir James Buchanan, Bart, Commander RN (retired) passed away on the 16th October 1901, in Craigend Castle, Milngavie, Stirlingshire, Scotland.[10]
A short notice of his death appeared in the Taunton Courier, Bristol and Exeter Journal and Western Advertiser (Taunton, Somerset) on the 23rd October.[11]
Sir James Buchanan, Bart., died on Weduesday night at his residence, Craigend Castle, Stirlingshire, at the age of 61. The cause of death was paralysis. Sir James was a retired commander of the Royal Navy.
His will was confirmed on the 8th February 1902, to George William Buchanan C.V., C.V,0., Sir Eric Alexander Buchanan, Baronet, and Henry Mellish.[12]
