Biography

Samuel was born in Kintles(?), Ontario in circa 1873. He was a son of Henry Buchanan.^[1]

He married Sadie Shaloe Bridges at York County, New Brunswick on December 25, 1907. At the time of their marriage, Samuel was listed as a commercial traveller and his residence was listed as New Westminster, British Columbia.^[1]

They resided in New Westminster, British Columbia. Samuel made his career in real estate and was well known in the area.^[2]

Samuel passed away in 1947 as is interred at the Fraser Cemetery in New Westminster.^[2]

The Buchanans held land in New Westminster and built a beautiful home overlooking the Fraser Valley with ornate gardens. Samuel Buchanan donated this home and land to the Salvation Army in 1946, due to the kindness shown by a Salvation Army minister to his wife during her illness before her death. The home was subsequently used as a retirement home for 52 women (1946) and later demolished to make way for a new multi-level care facility which opened in 1997. A park was developed from some of the land, and leased by the city of New Westminster from the Salvation Army until 1997, when it was transferred to the city's ownership.^[3][4]
