Mary “Polly” [1] was the daughter of Jonathan Bryan J[2] and Mary Williiamson . Bryan County, Georgia was named after Mary’s father.
Mary married John Morel 24 Jan 1767 [3][4] and was his second wife.
1776 Jul 22 at a meeting of the Council, following her husbands death, Mary, a widow, along with William Bryan presented a petition. The minutes recorded “that the petitioners be permitted to take possession of the said lands as prayed for” since they had no land on the main they could take their stock to.[5]
After John Morel died in 1776, Mary married Colonel Richard Wylly at Brampton Plantation [6] on the Savannah River 3 Jun 1784. [7] [8] A portrait of Mary and 4 of her children is on display in the Telfair Museum in Savannah, Georgia. Her husband, John Morel was cut from the portrait after her marriage to Richard Wylly. [9]
About December 1779, after John’s death, Mary’s father Jonathan Bryan was arrested. When Mary “tried to obtain leniency, she was treated by Commodore Parker with “vulgar rudeness and contempt””. [10]
Her portrait along with four of her children is on display in the Telfair Museum in Savannah, Georgia. [11]
11 Oct 1801 her husband, Richard Wylly, died.
The Telfair Museum lists the year of her birth as 1744 and year of death as 1822. [12] She was about 76 years old when she died. Her estate was being settled in 1824 [13] Bryan M. Morel (believed to be Mary’s grandson, Bryan McQueen Morel ) applied for letters of administration with the will annexed, debonis non on the estate and effects of Mary Wylly. “De bonis non administratis, Latin for "of goods not administered," is a legal term for assets remaining in an estate after the death or removal of the estate administrator. The second administrator is called the administrator de bonis non and distributes the remaining assets.” [14] The first of the newspaper ads for this was on 1 Nov 1825. [15]
Mary died before 6 May 1822 in Savannah, Georgia.[16]The cause of her death and the location of her burial is not known.
