Biography

Margaretta Sybilla Bryan was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on December 31, 1823, the daughter and youngest of the ten children of George Bryan and Anna Maria Steinman. Her grandfather was the Honorable George Bryan, who was born in Ireland, and became an American of notable political distinction.[1][2][3]

She married, August 17, 1853, Strickland Kneass, son of William Kneass and Mary Jane Honeyman. They had six children:[1][2][4][5]

  1. Anna, born October 4, 1854; died February 8, 1855, aged 4 months.
  2. Mary Bryan, born November 2, 1855; married, March 30, 1880, Isaac Crane Ogden Jr.
  3. Margaretta "Margie" Bryan, born December 4, 1857; married, April 20, 1882, J. Ralston Grant.
  4. Strickland Landis, born January 7, 1861; married, October 24, 1888, Mary Stewart Edwards; became a civil engineer.
  5. Samuel Bryan, born October 15, 1862; married, April 10, 1892, Annie Watson Brownlie.[6]
  6. Henrietta Logan, born March 3, 1869; married, May 20, 1891, the Rev. Stanley White.

Her husband died on January 14, 1884, at the age of 62.[1]

Margaretta Sybilla (Bryan) Kneass died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 20, 1891, at the age of 68. She was buried at Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.[3]

  • Birth Date: "Jordan" cites her birth date as July 29, 1823, "Magee" cites December 29, 1823, and "Find A Grave" cites Dec. 30, 1823, but the gravestone reads Dec. 31, 1823.
