Biography

Gesche Adelheid Bruns was born on 28 Nov 1820 in Ochtmannien, Hoya, Hannover (now part of Bruchhausen-Vilsen, Diepholz, Niedersachsen, Deutschland), and baptized on 3 Dec 1820, the daughter of Christian Bruns and Rebecke Adelheid Meyer. Her godmother was Gesche Eichhardt. ^[1]

She was confirmed in the parish of Vilsen in 1835. At the time she lived in Ochtmannien. ^[2]

Gesche Adelheid Bruns of Ochtmannien, daughter of Christian Bruns and Rebecke Adelheid Hinrich, married Johann Albert Mehlhop of Weseloh, son of Johann Albert Mehlhop and Marie Margarethe Meier, on 11 Aug 1844 in Vilsen. ^[3]

She came to the US about 1858.

She died on 14 Jul 1900 and was buried at St Johannes Cemetery in Bensenville, DuPage, Illinois. Her grave was relocated in the early 2010s, due to the expansion of O'Hare Airport, to Eden Memorial Park in Schiller Park, Cook, Illinois. ^[4]

Research Notes

It seems likely she didn't know exactly when she was born. Her baptism record clearly shows she was born on 28 Nov 1820. The records are in chronological order, so would not have the wrong month. Her parents' names on the baptism record match the parents' names on her marriage record. Her confirmation record shows she was born on 28 Dec 1820, but that seems like a clerical error since she was born in November and baptized in December. The information published in the Saint Johannes church 1899 membership list shows that she was born on 12 Mar 1820 in Engeln, and the St John's funeral and cemetery records show the same date. Her husband was living in Engeln when he was confirmed so maybe they just gave the church in Illinois the same village for both spouses. The villages were close to each other, and in the same parish. Her gravestone shows her birth on 9 Oct 1820. It is not known whether the gravestone shown on FindAGrave is the original stone from when she was buried or whether it was placed later. When the graves were moved from the original Saint Johannes Cemetery in the early 2010s many ended up with new gravestones.
