Biography

Birth and Parents

Luther was born in 1813. He was the son of Archibald Browning and Rebeckah Windsor.

Luther Martin Browning was born 28 May 1813 in Clarksburg, Montgomery County, Maryland. [1] He was the son of Archibald Browning, Jr. and Rebecca Winsor.

First Marriage to Harriet Ann King

Williams's History of Frederick County, Maryland gives Luther's first wife as Harriet Ann King, with whom he had children Harriet Ann and Luther H. H. [2]

He married Harriet Ann King 18 Jan 1835 in Frederick Co, MD. She was born about 1807 in Kings Valley, Montgomery County, Maryland, the daughter of John Duckett King and Jemima O. Miles, and died before 1865. [3] [1] [4]

Career

Luther Martin Browning was a blacksmith and farmer. In the Census of 1840 his was located between James Day and John Watkins, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 15-20, 1 male under 5, and 1 female 30-40, 1 15-20, 1 under 5. In the Census of 1850 he was in the Clarksburg District of Montgomery Co. In the 1860 census, he is shown with no wife but two children.

Second Marriage to Carilla Soper

Williams gives his second wife as Corilla Soper, with whom he had children Samuel and Morris.[2]

She was the daughter of Ignatious Soper and his wife Ann Browning.

Slaves

In 1867, expecting compensation, Luther Browning named the following people he had enslaved (as of 1864) in the Montgomery County Slave Statistics:[5]

In 1860, Luther is recorded as enslaving two people; an unknown black female (age 35, possibly Eleanor) and and unknown black female (age 15, possibly Margaret).[6]

He is buried with his second wife Carrilla Soper, who was b. 22 June 1828 and died 11 April 1896. [7]

  1. Harriet Ann Washington Browning, born 1838 in Maryland; died 11 Nov 1885; married Samuel Hobbs IV 27 Jan 1855 in Frederick Co, MD.
  2. Luther Henry Harrison Browning, born 11 Mar 1840 in Browningsville, Montgomery Co, MD; died 26 Jan 1908 in New Market Dist, Frederick Co, MD; married Sarah Louisa Brandenburg 25 Apr 1861; born 04 Feb 1843 in Frederick Co, MD; died 08 Apr 1917. Like his father, he was a blacksmith and a farmer, occasiionally mended clocks, and was known to practice a bit of medicine. He made his will October 4, 1904. [8] Luther Henry Harrison Browning is buried in Browningsville, Montgomery Co, MD
