Gordon Davis Browne was born in London and christened 22nd March 1805 in the parish of St. Mary the Less, Lambeth, Surrey, the son of Catherine and William Leader Browne. [1]
He was a timber merchant in Sydney, Australia
With Thomas Raine and David Ramsay, he established ship-building and timber yard at Horeke on the Hokianga Harbour, New Zealand. The schooner Enterprise; the brigantine New Zealander; & in 1830, the Sir George Murray were built there were built by Capt David Clarke. The firm became bankrupt in 1830.
By 1832, Gordon Davis Browne was trading timber at Mahurangi in association with Ranulph Dacre.
About 1835-1836, he moved his operations to Mercury Bay, where he purchased 3000 acres of standing timber. [2] He was in business with Captain Stewart, and built a stone wharf, store, and water-powered sawmill to supply spars to ships of the Royal Navy and other vessels. [3]
Business difficulties again forced him into debt.
He died at Waikare, Bay of Islands in 1842.
