Biography

James was born about 1856.

On 23 July 1890, James married Estella Mary Ann Watson at the Registry Office in Adelaide. Estella was 18 and James 27 (or possibly 34) years of age.^[1]

James and Estella had four children:

• Margaret Glass Browne (b. 1891 d 1914);^[2]
• Estella Glass (Browne) Forrest (b. 1894);^[3][4]
• James Glass Browne (b. 1896);^[5] and
• Winifred Glass (Browne) Marr.^[6][7]

Margaret and Estella were born in South Australia while James and Winifred were born in Western Australia. Margaret died suddenly, aged 23, in 1914. The following notice was placed in the Western Mail (Perth, WA : 1885 - 1954) on 4 September 1914:

BROWNE.—On September 1, at Amherst Road, Midland Junction, suddenly, Margaret Glass, eldest daughter of J. S. and E. M. Browne, sister of Essie, Winnie, and Jim Browne, aged 23 years. Deeply regretted. ^[8]

James Stirling Browne passed away on 9 July 1927 at Corrigin Hospital, Western Australia. He was 71 years of age. The following notice appeared in the Western Mail (Perth, WA : 1885 - 1954) on 21 July 1927:

BROWNE.—On July 9, 1927, at Corrigin Hospital, James Stirling Browne, late of Bulyee, dearly beloved husband of Estella Mary Ann Browne, and loving father of Margaret (deceased), Estella, James and Winfred; aged 71 years.^[9]

OBITUARY

It will be learnt with regret that Mr. James Stirling Browne passed away at Corrigin Hospital last Saturday, close to where he lived with his son on his farm. He was well known in Midland Junction, where he lived for many years, and carried out duties as storeman of Loco. Running Sheds. Prior to going to the farm he resided at Bassendean, and the sympathy of all goes towards his family. He was burled by W. Snell at Karrakatta on Tuesday morning the 12th inst. The chief mourners who followed, were his widow, Estella Mary Ann, Estella (Mrs. Forrest, daughter), Jim (son), Mr. Forrest (son-in-law), Mrs. Walsh, H. Evett. The pall-bearers were:—S. Faithful, T. Nell, R. K. Leader, W. Burnett. Noticed at the graveside:— Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Turtle, Mrs. Cruttendon, Miss Willis, Mr. Doran, Mr. F. Elliott, Mr. Forrest and others. Winnie (Mrs. Marr) a daughter, resides in Melbourne. ^[10]

Research Notes

The age of James Sterling (Stirling) Browne is not clear. No primary documentation for birth year has been located to date. The marriage citation suggests a birth year of 1863 while the death notice clearly states an age of 71 at the time of death in 1927, giving a birth year of 1856.
