Biography
Charles Brown has African ancestry.
Descendant of John Randall, who was a First Fleet convict of African descent.
Charles Brown has Irish ancestors.
Charles Brown was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
While no birth certificate appears to have been registered for Charles, he is highly likely to have been born circa 1833. [1] He was the son of William Brown, described as an orchardist and Annie Rindall (Frances Randall).
Little is known about Charles when he was growing up, however is record as having married Margaret Cunningham in 1853 [2], when he was aged around 18. [1]. Unfortunately, very little is known about his Margaret [see Research Note 1].
However, what is clear is that the children mentioned in Charles' death certificate, William (listed as 34 years) , Charles (32), and George (28) [1] were not born to Margaret but to another women named Elizabeth Mitchell.
Charles is recorded as living at Blue Gum Flat, which is now known as Ourimbah, in the 1870-71 Electoral Roll [3]
Charles Brown passed away in 1902. [4] His death certificate described his occupation as a sawyer. [1]
Research Notes
There is no certainty that this is out Margaret (Cunningham) Brown, however, there is a record of an inquest into the death of a Margaret Brown on 22 Mar 1854, who was showing visible signs of pregnancy, which she was trying to conceal. She was reported to have attempted to procure deleterious drugs on several occasions, of which she was refused. Upon finding her body, the coroner (from Liverpool) ruled that she had died as a result of being poisoned by the drugs she had been attempting to obtain. He ruled that there was insufficient evidence to find a motive for the death, whether it was a voluntary, or through the agency and advice of others. [5]
