American poet, novelist and Academy Award winning screen writer.

Born Harry McNab Brown Jr on April 30, 1917 in Portland, Cumberland, Maine. He was the son of Harry McNab Brown and Bessie Maud Hiles.[1]

He was 23 years old, living in New York City and working for The New Yorker (magazine) when he completed his World War II registration and signed himself as Harry P. M. Brown. He enlisted in the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1941 where he served at Fort Belvoir, Virgina. In 1942 he joined the staff of Yank Magazine.

The time spent in military service was drawn upon for many of his literary and screen works. In 1951 He won The Academy Award jointly with Micheal Wilson for Best Adapted Screenplay for A Place in the Sun.

He married Thelma Elizabeth Janson about 1942 and they had a daughter named Melissa. They were divorced before 1952.

He married Marguerite Lamkin on September 27, 1952 in Monroe, Ouachita County, Louisiana and were divorced before 1959.[4][5][6]

He married June Jollie in 1959 and they had at a son named Jared. They moved to Mexico in the early 1960's and lived there for about 15 years in Guanajuto. They were divorced on February 9, 1982 in Los Angeles County, California.[7]

Harry died at the age of 69 on November 2, 1986 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California and was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Los Angeles, California.[8][9]

  • His 1944 novel A Walk in the Sun was made into a film with the same name in 1945. Brown was credited for his work on the first Ocean's 11 when it was remade in 2001.
