Jacob was a Friend (Quaker)

Son of Samuel and Abi (White) Brown, Jacob was raised as a Quaker. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and relocated to upstate New York in 1798.[1] Brown was initially commissioned in 1807 as a Captain in the 108th regiment of the New York Militia. Due to his distaste for frequent and expensive wastes by the government he was promptly promoted to the rank of Colonel. As the War of 1812 began, Brown was already a Brigadier General in the New York militia. He oversaw the Great Lakes defenses and was transferred to regular Army as Brigadier General after defeating the British at the Battle of Sackett's Harbor.

In the following year, he captured Fort Erie in Ontario and defeated the British again at the Battle of Chippawa. During the Battle of Lundy's Lane, a horrific and costly engagement for both sides, he was twice wounded. His final conquest was at the Siege of Fort Erie in 1814. His astounding successes earned him the Congressional Gold Medal.

Considering the actions above, it is almost unbelievable he was also a family man. He married Pamelia Williams in December of 1802 and they had four sons and five daughters. Gouverneur, Jacob, William, Nathan and Mary, Eliza, Pamela, Margaret, Katherine, were their names.

Legacy

Four states have named counties after Gen. Brown: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. The towns of Brownville and Pamelia (which was set off from Brownville), New York are named after him and his wife.[2]

Is there some reason the parents and children have not been linked? Gen. Brown's parents have been clearly identified in Wikipedia's biography as Samuel and Abigail (White) Brown, and that article cites as its source "Morris, John D. (2000). Sword of the Border: Major General Jacob Jennings Brown, 1775–1828. Kent State University Press." A bit of searching shows Samuel and "Abi" Brown are indeed on WikiTree, and easily linked. Samuel Brown (1750 - 1813) is Brown-105124. His wife, Abigail White, is White-40514. She's the daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Taylor) White of Buck County, PA. I've added some more data from FamilySearch.org to help solidify their sourcing and their parental link to Gen. J.J. Could you add them? Thanks!

Mark - honestly I don't think anyone other than you has reviewed this profile since 2017. I'm pretty tied up on some other projects at the moment, but have removed the PPP as I really don't see a need for it. That should allow family to be added and hopefully remove any obstacles to editing. Let me know if you see any risks as it relates to false parents or merging. Thanks!
