Biography
Sanford was born about 1842 in Appleton, Maine. He was the son of Joseph Brown and Rachel Cox. In 1860, at age 19, Sanford was still living with his parents in Appleton. He married Susan Maria Cox, daughter of John Cox and Lovina Hallowell, on June 8, 1861 in Edmunds. In 1870, 28-year old Sanford was living with wife Susan (age 27) and four year old son Marnes J. Brown. Susan passed away shortly after the 1870 Census was taken.
Sanford married 2nd Ada E. Smith in Pembroke on October 4, 1871. Sanford and Ada raised several children of their own, plus Marnes. Sometime after the 1880 Census, Sanford and Ada moved to Whiting, Maine. Ada passed away in Lubec on September 11, 1900. She was 46 years old.
Sanford married 3rd Emily P. Holmes Durgan. Emily was the widow of Peter Durgan. She and Sanford were married in Machiasport on Jan 25, 1901. She was 50 years old and Sanford was 53. They continued to live in Whiting.
Sanford passed away sometime after the 1920 Census was taken. Emily passed away in 1942 and was buried in the Whiting Cemetery, Whiting, Maine. Sanford’s burial place is uncertain. For Emily's grave, see Find A Grave: Memorial #94110432.
