Biography

John was born in 1860. He was the son of John Brown and Elizabeth Fish. ^[1]

He passed away 3 July 1886 age 25 at his mother's residence, "Cairns Terrace" (Dunedin?); after a long and painful illness. ^[2]

He is buried at Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington, with his parents and a shared headstone. ^{[3] [4]}

Research Notes

The headstone says 1858-1886 . It might be possible John was born 1858 and the 1860 was a different John Thomas , but the NZ death reg says age 25 which is correct for an 1860 birth. So the simpler explanation is a mistake on the headstone.

The location "Cairns Terrace" was published in an Otago newspaper so it is probably in Dunedin, with no other context given. There is no street of that name now. There are references to "Cairns Terrace, Walker Street" however there is no Walker Street now either! So this location remains a mystery.
