Biography

Thomas was a Friend (Quaker)

Thomas Brown was born at New Garden Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania to William Brown, the 'Immigrant', and Anne Mercer, his second wife. He was among the first generation of Browns born in the new American colony within the Quaker tradition.[1]

Thomas's mother died less than two years after his birth. His father remarried twice.

On the 17th Feb, 1718, Thomas Brown requested a certificate from Nottingham Monthly Meeting to attend the Duck Creek Monthly Meeting to marry Ellen/Ellin/Ellinor Cowgill/Cogle.[2] The Browns and the Cowgills were close friends, Thomas's brother, William, had married Ellen's sister Elizabeth in 1715. The couple twice notified the Duck Creek meetings in Kent County, Delaware, of their intentions and were married by May, 1719 when Ellen Brown requested a certificate to remove to the Nottingham Monthly Meeting.[3]

There is a detailed record in the "Nottingham Monthly Meeting Births and Deaths 1691-1883", which provides a complete account of the births of the couple's nine children and includes other biographical details including Thomas's death and Ellinor's remarriage and death.[4]

Thomas Brown died on 19 of February, 1747 in the township of West Nottingham, Chester Co., Pennsylvania Colony.[5] He wrote his will in 1745 - the probated last testament is a fascinating, intact document on 8 pages detailing four years of planning from Thomas's last wishes, to the collecting of debts and the valuations and dispersal of possessions including a plantation and an orchard. The family appear to have led a comfortable, and busy, life.[6]
