Susie enlisted in the US Army Women's Army Corps on 2 February 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. She was single at the time, and worked in the fabrication of textile products. She was listed as an Aviation Cadet.^[1] She also was part of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion of the United States Army during World War II which handled the mail.
