Biography

Elizabeth Brooke was born in 1709. She was the daughter of Clement Brooke and Jane Sewall.

She lived as the common law wife of Charles Carroll of Annapolis from about 1736 until they were married 21 years later in 1757. Their only son, Charles Carroll was born in 1737 and it is believed that his parents waited 20 years to legitimize his birth to ensure he became a man worthy of his substantial inheritance. Charles Carroll of Annapolis was a very wealthy planter who became the richest man of his time in Maryland.

Elizabeth died in 1761 aged about 52.
