Captain Daniel Brodhead was a captain of British grenadiers who arrived in New Netherland in 1664 with Colonel Richard Nic(k)olls, under authority from the Duke of York, grantee under King Charles II, as part of the English expedition that wrested New York from Dutch control. He was accompanied by his wife Anne and two children.[1]
He is assumed to have originated in Yorkshire, born around 1630. His status as an officer suggests that he might have been born among the gentry. His descendant Lucas Brodhead identified him as a grand-nephew of John Brodhead of Monk Britton, Yorkshire, to whom the Manor of Monk Britton had been granted on 28 February 1610. He said that Daniel Brodhead was made a Captain of Musketeers by Charles II on his restoration in 1660.[2] In 1989 and 1991 the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society reporting having received reports by Debrett's Peerage Ltd. on an investigation of the English origins of Daniel Brodhead [3] These two reports are likely to indicate whether there is any basis for that account of his origins.
He married Ann Tye in England (presumably in Yorkshire), where sons Daniel and Charles Brodhead were born.[2] A third son, Richard, was born in Ulster County, New York, in 1666.[4][2][1]
Captain Brodhead, with the title of "Captain-General of the Esopes" (Esopus), was, with his troops, assigned to the defense of the country bordering that stream. He made his headquarters at Marbletown, not far from the Hudson River, and where he died July 14, 1667. In England he had married Ann Tye, who survived him. Two sons were born in England. In 1697 Ann Tye built for herself a residence on the property which had been occupied by her husband, and which remained with her descendants until the late 1800s.[1]
Daniel was born about 1630. This birthdate is a rough estimate. He passed away in 1667.
