Theaden Nancie Brocklebank was born in 1897 in Essendon, Victoria (Australia). She was the older daughter of Kyneton, Victoria-born parents John Brocklebank and Mary Jarrett. [1] She was named after the family property near Kyneton. Her younger sister and brother were both born in Daylesford, Victoria, in 1900 and 1903 respectively.
Theaden married Keith Hancock on 6th March 1925 in Eccleston Square Congregational Church, London. [2] Later that year, the couple travelled to South Australia, where Keith had been appointed Professor of Modern History at the University of Adelaide.
In 1934 they returned to England, Keith taking up an appointment as Professor of History at University of Birmingham. In 1944 he became Chichele Professor of Economic History at Oxford University and in 1949 he became Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and Professor of British Commonwealth Affairs at the University of London.
When Keith was knighted in 1953, Theaden became entitled as Lady Hancock.
In late 1956 the couple moved back to Australia, Keith taking up the appointment of Director of the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University, in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.
Aged about 63 years, Theaden passed away in 1960 in Canberra.
