Charlotte's mother was Mary Broad, who was sent to Australia as a convict with the First Fleet. Charlotte was born at sea, on the convict ship, Charlotte, for which she was named.
Charlotte's mother married William Bryant. When they reached Port Jackson, Mary and William escaped from Port Jackson with seven other convicts, in addition to Charlotte and her half-brother Emanuel. Following an epic journey they arrived at Timor, where they were recaptued. During the voyage back, William and both of Mary's children perished of fever; Emanuel dying on the 1st December 1791 and William dying on 22nd December 1791 at Batavia. Charlotte died on the last leg of the voyage, on 6th May 1792.[1]
