Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Henry Britton is a part of US Black heritage.

Henry was freeborn in 1825 in Kentucky. He was of Spanish and Indian descent. He was the father of Mary Ellen Britton, an American physician, educator, suffragist, journalist and civil rights activist.[1]

Henry married a woman named Laura Trigg on 19 Oct 1854 in Fayette, Kentucky.[2] "Laura Trigg was a gifted singer and musician who had been well-educated under the protection of her mother who was an enslaved mistress to Kentucky statesman Thomas F. Marshall. Laura had been emancipated at the age of sixteen." [3]

The couple was mentioned on the birth record of their daughter, Mary Ellen.[4]

On Mary's death certificate, Laura's surname was Marshall.[5] More documentation is needed.

In 1860, the couple and their children were living in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky.[6] The household included:

  • Henry Briton Male 35 Ky

  • Julia Briton Female 8 Ky
  • Mary Briton Female 6 Ky

By 1870, the family had moved to Glade, Madison County, Kentucky. Mary's father was a barber.[7] The household included:

In his compilation, published 1897, W D Johnson includes a biographical sketch of daughter, Mary E Britton, which states that her father Henry died suddenly on 17 March 1874, and that her mother Laura died 9 July of that same year. [8]

Henry was born in 1825.
