Edward was born in 1889. He was the fifth son of Francis Brittan and Florence Templer.
In 1886 his only sister Helen died at the age of 17 months.
His name was published in the New Zealand, World War I Army Reserve Rolls (1916-1917). He was single, living at Mount Parnassus, North Canterbury, working as a Shepherd.
Edward enrolled to serve and gained the rank of Trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, Main Body. His next of kin was recorded as F.H. Brittan, Avonside, Christchurch, New Zealand. Service No: 7/495
EMBARKATION DETAILS WW1 16 October 1914 from Wellington, New Zealand. HMNZT 4 or HMNZT 11. Vessel was Tahiti or Athenic.
His three brothers Harold, Henry and Francis also served.
Tragically he was killed in action at Gallipoli on 28 August 1915, as was his brother Henry. He was 26 years of age.
His body was probably never recovered, and he was buried where he fell.
Edward's name is on the Hill 60 (New Zealand) Memorial at Gallipoli[1].
His other brother Harold was also killed in action on 5 April 1918 in France.
