Hi Norman!

Thanks for joining us! I hope you're enjoying our site and our community. I just wanted to check in and see how things are going. Has the New Member How To Pages been helpful or has it left you with questions?

It's great to have you on board. Enjoy your time here, and good luck growing your branches. If you need help just click on my name and you will be transferred to my profile where you can post a message or send me a private message.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Welcome Norman!

Thanks for volunteering! I am pleased to confirm and welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration. Don't be afraid to ask questions in our G2G forum and get involved as much or as little as works for you. Be sure to check out the tabs at the very top right hand side of your profile, there is lots to discover!

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do!

Happy tree climbing

Hello Rhonda,

Many thanks for the very prompt reply and welcome. Perhaps I can pick your brains? The family tree I have worked on is in Ancestry.com and I need a GEDCOM reader application for my Apple Mac Air. I'm NOT a whizz at IT, and wondered if you had any recommendations on what software application I might find well-suited to downloading and working with the tree? I would look to then upload it to WIKITREE

Is it worth spending more than £50 GBP on a piece of software? Is so, which one, please?

Look forward to hearing from you Regards John (confusingly, first name is Norman, always used second name, hence John!)

Hi John!

While I don't know much about Mac's, my fellow greeters have offered this advice:

RootsMagic https://www.rootsmagic.com/Try/RootsMagic/ has a free version that does work on the Mac. If the only purpose is to prepare a GEDCOM for WikiTree, the free version will do that and much more. I am not affiliated with the company but have used the free version of the software on a PC when creating GEDCOMs.

There is also a discussion on g2g here https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/932289/unable-to-save-gedcom-with-macbook that may help as well. Hope this helps!

Thanks again Rhonda - your lead to RootsMagic Essentials has delivered new, free, MAC-compatible app to me, and I've succeeded in downloading my tree from Ancestry.com.

Just checking it, then I'll upload to Wikitree! Brilliant John
